"Over-priced fish and chips"

Will Ferrell wants to buy a pub in West London, according to Hello magazine. The American comedy actor has said that "over-priced fish and chips does not constitute a real British pub". He's right - judging by the signs outside chain pubs advertising main meals for little more than a fiver, I'd suggest that very cheap, very bad fish and chips seems to be far more authentic.

I thought this article would be more fitting on a beer blog.

At the risk of causing a ruck I think Jeff needs to be less sensitive. If Ferrell wants to tell him to get on with it. In terms of Fish and Chips I will put it like this, I am not fan of nasty pub food but equally I ain't that keen on ordering "Fish lightly battered in our own special recipe and served with a side of chunketeted potato's" only to find the reason that is twice the price of "Fish and chips" has nothing to do with the food (disclaimer, based on a short sample the Gunmakers food is fine and worth a little extra), which can be a common thing in "West London" or "Greater Islington".

Now to be fair to Jeff he is at least consistent with his "you get what you pay for" approach to food but equally he knows that not all establishments in his price catergory deliver equal standards.

So short version, Ferrall has a point.

I'd say, to take one example, Wetherspoon's do OK fish and chips and as the food is as cheap as the beer cannot be described as 'overpriced' whatever you think of it. (Ditto Greggs food btw).

Clarkeoneil, you've somehow managed to completely misinterpret this post. I wasn't making a serious point, really, let alone being "sensitive".

Matt, you've obviously just got different standards to me. Don't worry, that's allowed. I completely disagree that cheap food cannot be overpriced, however.

Slightly off-topic, I know. We have the opposite problem here in NZ. Good pub food including fish & chips, reasonably priced, but sometimes the beer is so dear its not funny.

The list for Auckland's Brew on Quay includes bottled Black Sheep Ale for NZ$20.50. At the current exchange rate that's about £9.50. I know it's had a way to travel, but doesn't Asda still knock it out at 1.69?
