Dark

Dark beers don't seem to sell as quickly as lighter ales - even at this time of year - yet some people moan when there aren't any on offer. It's a dilemma for the landlord who wants to please both regular customers and any beer enthusiasts that happen to swing by. Undeterred, I'm going to try and have a dark beer on throughout winter. I'm relying on cats like yourselves to come and drink them. Right now we've got Moorhouses Black Cat on downstairs. Next week I'm taking delivery of a supply of Adnams Old. After that, there'll be a pair of stouts: Caledonian Double Dark and Titanic Chocolate and Vanilla.

I'd be right over...

You know it is likely good for me that the Ocean stands between me and your taps.

Alan, the only thing that comes out of my taps is hot and cold water. The ale comes through beer engines...

That Titanic chocolate and vanilla is lovely. It was on at Cask a couple of nights back.

Jeff - When do you reckon these stouts will be on? I'll pencil an evening in the diary and pop on down

Funny. I was at The Gunmakers last night and noticed the slant towards the light and hoppy (well Landlord and Mad Goose) and pondered how this style seems to be everywhere these days. I haven't drunk a more robustly flavoured pint for some time, or so it seems, and my taste buds are going into a more sober winter mode. This might however be due to me drinking far too much Dark Star's Hophead last Friday...

M.J.Moth, at the beginning of the evening I was selling Purity Mad Goose, Landlord and Wherry alongside Black Cat (a dark mild). But by the close of play Hobgoblin and Harvey's had replaced Mad Goose and Wherry, so you probably would have been happier then!

Darkstar's Over The Moon, followed by Winter Solstice. You know it makes sense. With maybe a cask of Triple Fff Pressed Rat & Warthog to split up the run of Darkstar perfection :)

I have the opposite problem and cant sell light beers! Right now have dark Island from Orkney Brewery- a 4.6% almost black coloured beer from Scotland and it is absolutely divine. Also just had a good run on dark Milds- Black Cat, Blackdog, Arundell (the best of the lot) and Darkstar Over the Moon.

Light sells better than dark, you say.
I know where Nick Griffin can hold his Christmas party then ...

Nick Griffin probably likes his beer through a sparkler ...

You can blame it on those whipper-snappers who like light beers (easy cross-over from keg lagers!).

Oh course I think this is rubbish! I'm 24 and I love a darker drink! Give me a fruity stout or a yummy porter any day of the week (or time of year!).

Acorn Old Moor Porter - good place to start!

Or if you are thinking something foreign...Hummel Cowboy Swaz Beer (Baverian) - beauty itself in a glass!
If you get some of this in it will be gone the same evening you put it on!

I had that Caledonian Double Dark at the weekend pre-fleetwood mac, having every intention to only have one pint.

Lets just say it's very, very good and leave it at that.
