Certainly the best beer in the world

I got back from Prague last night after 48 hours on the hoy in some of my favourite pubs. I'd been off the sauce for almost a fornight before I touched down, so my first pint of Pilsner Urquell (the unpasteurised version, served from a tank rather than keg) seemed to be the best beer I've ever tasted.

I had a few hours on my own before the lads arrived at midnight, so I spent Sunday evening crawling up through the Malastrana. Starting at the Malostranská Pivnice, I visited U Hrocha and U Kocoura before ending my solo session at the Klasterni Pivovar in the Strahov Monastery. It was a cold, misty evening, and as I climbed through the narrow, unspoiled streets of the lesser quarter toward the spires of Strahov, it felt like a waking dream.

The spell was broken somewhat when the others arrived and we made for a less salubrious joint off the Wenceslas Square. But at the end of the day I was there for a stag do, not a trip down my own personal memory lane.

What zany slogan did you have on your polo, Jeff?

Only Doc Robbles himself wore the polo shirt at any point in the stag. I didn't even bring mine with me. They said "Chadstag '09, European Tour, London-Rome-Prague". The "Prague" bit fell Robbles' polo shirt, as did the beer mug picture. In all, the whole thing was a bit of disaster the little man, leaving him £180 out of pocket.

I think what certain sourpuss commenters on the last thread misunderstood is that (a) all the stag-related cliches such as a slogan polo shirts were entirely ironic and (b) we're all very, very middle class, so even in a big group we're not all threatening or uncouth.

Did they have this years autumn dark special on at Strahov yet?

Yes, they did. I tried it and to be honest it wasn't so great. I prefer the normal dark lager - which wasn't available.

All in all I wasn't as taken with Strahov as on previous visits. This time, the star of the microbreweries for me was Pivovarsky Dum. And the best Pilsner Urquell was in U Rudolfinium.

Next time you go over, you should try the PU in Bruska up near Hradcanska metro station - not only the best PU in Prague but a proper Czech pub as well.
