Burger off

We change our menu all the time. That seems to really perplex those more comfortable in chain establishments, but I think the promise of variety brings us a lot of our repeat custom. To date, I've always kept a burger (with cheese, bacon and hand-cut chips) on the menu. Just to mix things up a bit, Chef dropped it last week. Most people haven't commented, but judging from the positively petulant reaction from a certain type of male customer, you'd think we'd broken some golden rule of pub kitchens.

The burger will be back next week, probably. As I said, we change our menu all the time.

Aww, you never know - they could have been particularly looking forward to your burger all day.

Happens to me occasionally in a good pub I frequent in Brum - they have a small and occasionally-changing menu, but some real good stuff on it that I can't get elsewhere - like triple-cooked chips (best I've had in a pub in Brum), and they do really juicy cooked-to-order burgers - had been working myself up for days looking forward to an after-work treat of a med-rare burger with some of their fantastic chips and a pint of Mad Goose, only to be told burger and chips were both off their new menu experiment.

I'm all for the chef mixing it up a bit, keeping selections fresh and using whatever ingredients come to hand, but it was such a disappointment on that day when I knew I couldn't have got a better burger and chips and decent pint anywhere nearby!

(no doubt the customer you encountered was rude and unreasonable and fully deserves your scorn, I just wanted to point out another possible side to it too and give him the benefit of the doubt!)

Surely if they want American food there is a McDonald's nearby? ;)

Nothing wrong with having a good burger on the menu. Maybe you should rename the pub to Bell's Burger & Ale Emporium? I think that has a wonderful ring to it!

i think you need to diversify into Southern Style BBQ. Ribs and TT Landlord are an awesome combo

Basically its down to this, if its just "Burger" you should feel free to change it any time you like, if however its "Gunmakers Burger" then your associating attendence at your pub with its avialability and therefore so long as doing a burger is something your happy to do (and you have implied before your chef thinks its no what he wants to do) it needs to be on.

Simples.

Good on you, I'm sure you know very well that I like this story.

McDonald's isn't American food…it is a multi-national corporate product.

Comparing a quality burger to McDonald's is like comparing a TT landlord to Stella. Or more appropriately Pliney the Elder to Coors Light.

Yes, yes, yes!! What's a burger anyway? It's a sandwich! The Liars Club in San Diego(RIP) had a burger called The Fuego burger. Grilled Anaheim's, Jalepeno's, Serranos, Pepper Jack Cheese, Jalapeno Aioli oil, with chips! It was not only the best burger I've ever tasted, it would knock Christ off the cross!! It would give your balloon knot a run for its money!! Perhaps Bell should look into a fiery burger, or is your clientele the Korma type?

Changing the menu all the time is ok, but (by your own admission) changing the beers all the time is not? An interesting juxtaposition.

Would people be petulant if the Landlord or Harveys was off?

The point I'd make is that no customer has the right to be petulant about any variation in a pub's offer. If you don't like it, go somewhere else.

You see, the customer isn't the boss - the landlord is, as long as his business succeeds. If you want to decide what food's on the menu and what beers are on the bar at a pub, you need to get your own business...
