The Maltings in York
The Maltings in York is a great pub. Unusually for somewhere dedicated to beer, it wasn't full of weirdos (well, there was one, but even though he was pretty fat he didn't quite manage to fill the bar). We visited during the afternoon on New Year's Eve, kicking off a marathon session. There were some great cask beers on offer - including a smoked ale from Dark Star - but I was particularly taken with a bottle conditioned raspberry stout that was specially brewed for the pub.

The Maltings is on Tanners Moat in York. The pub has a website.

I liked it a lot. We shared a table with a lovely group of french ladies(not yer typical camra stereotypes unfortunately). Surprised you didn't goof on the decor! Did you miss the toilet in the corner? Thought for sure you'd have some pithy comments about that! :-)
Ps. Not only dedicated to beer, but they have a hell of a lot of cider and different unusual wines as well...
Great pub, last time I was there the landlord gave Pauli and I both post cards and Black Sheep shirts free of charge! Wonderful ale house and well worth a visit while in York.
I fell in love with this place when I stumbled upon it ten years ago. Well kept ales and pretty welcoming to a Yank. My most recent visit there, the missus was ecstatic to find Fullers Porter on cask as she'd been on a quest for a non-Guinness dark beer. Ah, memories.
Stonch - Who brewed the raspberry stout? Sounds delicious.
MicMac, sorry I don't know. It was ages ago. I probably didn't even ask at the time. I just drank it.
Good to see you've discovered one of my locals. When I first moved to York in the early 90's it was a real ale desert - now it's positively brimming with good pubs selling well kept real stuff.
The new star on the block is The Judges Lodgings - just across the bridge from The Maltings - 7 very well kept local Yorkshire beers on at any one time.
one of the few places where the landlord will happily sit and talk beer with you (depending on how busy it is). something not to be taken for granted.
