Video tasting notes - Duke of Bronte Capstan FS

Earlier in the week I reviewed Duke of Bronte Capstan FS, a fiendishly strong bottled beer from Yorkshire. Writer Zak Avery has also tried it and recorded his thoughts in the video I've embedded here. He goes into considerable detail, and does so without having tasted the beer before. Hats off.

Zak is planning to release video tasting notes like this every week. Let me know if you'd like me to post more of them. Or perhaps I should have a bash myself?

Information:

  1. Duke of Bronte can be purchased from the Old Bear Brewery in Keighley, West Yorkshire and from local suppliers. There's a mail order service too. The brewery has a website
  2. Zak Avery is a beer writer based in the Leeds area. He maintains a website, the The Beer Boy. He also manages an award-winning beer shop, BeerRitz in Headingley. As you can see, he has a beard and he loves beer. On the other hand he isn't fat and isn't wearing a fleece. I can't decide which pigeon hole to put him in.

I've just barred myself from your blog. What a bunch of pathetic, pretentious shit. If you had a pair you'd review the Duke of Bronte Capstan FS yourself, which I just drank in San Diego this evening. Stick to lager shandy, that's about the speed of your blog.

I rarely do full beer tastings any more and when I do, I send 'em off to the Oxford Bottled Beer Database. In my view detailed beer tastings make for rather dull blogging and to do them properly is too time consuming.

So while I personally find Zak's stuff interesting enough, we can read it and listen to it on his site can't we? As for having a bash yourself? I'd say don't!

The beard, fleece, fat, thin, beer conundrum is a tricky one for sure.

Who rattled Whorst's cage? Is he frustrated 'cos he's not english? Or is he hoping for more hits to his blog? Wanker.

I liked the tasting video and Zaks enthusiasm. Thanks.

Tandleman - I hear what you're saying, and agree that a dry collection of tasting notes would make for a very dull blog.

That's why I've tended to restrict them to beers that are exceptional and/or "newsworthy" in some way, or where I can use them to illustrate a point I want to make.

Zak's video approach is interesting, I think, and I wanted to see what people thought.

I like the idea, but leave Zak's on his own site - we can all bookmark it anyway. Actually, I think you should video your own tasting notes down the pub with a few mates, Stonch. Leave it until round number three or four and the entertainment value is bound to be better!

Thanks for the tip-off, Stonch. Probably wouldn't have come across Zak's videos or site otherwise.

As for which pigeonhole to put him in... how about the one marked "Good Egg", as he certainly seems like one.

I think Whorst needs to crawl under his rock again. What a sad little man. I've said it before, no wonder people don't like Americans.

Not sure I like the "Jilly Goolden" approach to beers but its a nice video.

A video of a pretentious poof posted prominently on the page of another ostensible poof.

Yawn.

I don't know why you've attracted such ire with this one. It's generally accepted practice in the blogging world to highlight interesting articles and features elsewhere. Thanks for posting.

What can I say - that's the internet for you. I value the feedback I get from commenters here enormously, and they encourage me to keep posting. I suppose it's case of taking the rough with the smooth!

Cheers all.

The bloke runs a good beer shop and he knows what he's talking about. Personally I think Old Bear beers are pretty poor, but as I've not tried this one I'll not comment on it...!

Cheers for pointing out his site, I didn't know he had one.

I enjoyed Zak's vblog - I've just watched a couple more on youtube. It's funny what rattles cages, eh - I think drink may have been involved, though, shocking a thought as that is :~)

Anyway, I like the fairly brief, but seemingly perceptive way Zak has with the tasting note itself. Good stuff.

Should you have a go, Stonch - I don't know - I like that Zak has a theme (not just random beer tastings, but an emphasis on tasting beers by their appropriate season) so maybe take a theme if you are going to do it?

Did he miss the fact that you already DID review the Duke of Bronte Capstan FS on Feb 6th?
Is this "Misteh Stanch" thing supposed to be funny?
I'd say it sounds like he has his eye on you, Stonch.. so what is with the homophobia on his end?

Happy V Day to all

I like Zak's enthusiasm; he's doing it very much in the style of the wine reviewers that we see endlessly on TV. It's about time someone made a stand for the complexities of beer seeing as Camra are preoccupied with us getting a full pint; and trying to encourage women to sign up by Photoshopping the top of a woman's head with a pint. Christ, who thought of that one.

whorst is a dick. end of.

cheers,

Never trust people who think beer subdivides into "lager", "bitter" and "Guinness". Never trust people who say they like chain bars because "they always know what they're getting". Never trust people who list "socialising" as an interest on their CV. Never trust people who can't give a straightforward answer when you ask them where they're from. Never trust people who invite you on skiing trips when you have never expressed any interest in the sport (or indeed their company). Never trust blokes who try and ban the c-word from conversation because their bird doesn't like it (just say it more). Never trust people who "don't like to lose control". Finally and most importantly, never, ever trust people who don't drink beer, unless they have a very good excuse - and for the avoidance of doubt, being an uptight, miserable sod is not a very good excuse.
