Liefmans - bankrupt

Recently I reported that Belgian brewer Liefmans was in trouble. According to this story, the company was declared bankrupt on Friday. It's a sad day, but hopefully not the end of the road for the brewery. Perhaps a white knight could still emerge.

I don't normally deal with "industry" news on this site. However, my first post, on 3rd January, was about Liefmans Goudenband, the brewery's flagship beer. I wrote that "I haven't visited the Liefmans Brewery in Oudenaarde yet, but it's on the list". It seems I left it too late.

Any chance of a Stonch-led reader buy-out?

I toured this brewery many years ago and it was a unique experience. It is a shame. The brands are strong though, so maybe a white knight will come to the rescue?

It would be bad though if just the brands were bought and a bastardised version was foisted on us.

sad, sad news. Goudenband is my choice for xmas day this year, too. Looks like it's gonna have a bittersweet taste now.

I have begun the hoarding of their kriek, the only locally available example. I doubt, however, that my nine paper wrapped bottles will see me out to the end of this mortal coil, this sad veil of tears that is life so I really hope Belgian bankruptcy court is not a useless exercise in creditor placation.

Unfortunately today a higher court confirmed the bad news: http://www.aboutbelgium.com/brewery-liefmans-definively-bankrupt-2_article17.html

Hopefully Duvel-Moortgat won't treat acquired brands like inbev does :-S
