Your favourite London Pub is . . .

. . . The Wenlock Arms.

This famous Hoxton boozer sits on a corner, hidden deep within an unlovely council estate. One side looks out on a row of warehouses and modern apartments. On the other, you can peer through a permanently cracked window onto a sorry little park. The building was once the tap for a brewery of the same name, but that was demolished in the 1960s. The interior of the pub hasn't changed much since then, but I doubt they had nine handpumps on the bar when Harold Wilson was in his prime. The carpet is worn bare, dust clings to the gantry, yet the place always feels terribly comfortable to me.

You'll find ales here from microbreweries across Britain. Adnams beers are perhaps the most prosaic choice, chosen only by the timid. Liefmans Kriek is available from the keg, with a limited choice of familiar German and Belgian bottles in the fridge. Doorstep sandwiches and pickled eggs will stave off the hunger pangs if you choose to work your way through the full selection.

The pub's denizens are a varied bunch, and a fiercely loyal tribe. Locals from the estate mingle with beardy ale lovers and younger folk who've got the sense to recognise this place is something special, a part of London's history that still lives and breathes. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings jazz musicians squeeze behind the piano by the door and knock out standards. Some of them look old enough to remember the Crimean War, but their fingers are still nimble.

A word of warning. When you walk in to the Wenlock, people will look at you. They might even stare. That's not because you aren't welcome - such a famous pub is used to outsiders, indeed it thrives because of them. You'll be given the once over because drinkers at the Wenlock aren't just interested in the beer. They're interested in the people that make the pub what it is. When you walk in, say hello, and order a pint, you become one of those people.

Information:

  1. The Wenlock Arms is at 26 Wenlock Road, N1 7TA map, website). Contrary to popular belief, it isn't hard to find, and is quite centrally located by the City of London. If you're coming by tube, get off at Old Street, walk up City Road, then take a left onto Windor Terrace, which then becomes Wenlock Road after about 100 yards. Easy.
  2. The pub is hosting a toast to Michael Jackson on Sunday, 30 September at 8pm.
  3. The full results of the poll were Wenlock Arms 23.7%, Market Porter 19.4%, Jerusalem Tavern 18.7%, Royal Oak 16.5%, Pembury Tavern 13.7%, Rake 7.9%. Thanks to everyone who voted.

This is the 200th post on Stonch's Beer Blog. Once again, thanks to you all for reading this drivel. Keep the emails and comments coming, I need your help if I'm going to drink myself to an early grave.

Perfect timing - I'm coming back to the UK (from Oz) for a week to catch up with old friends and the one thing I miss apart from my friends is the beer.
For a lunch venue would anyone recommend the JT? It looks like it serves food... Would it have a table that'd hold 10 people?
For the afternoon I feel a six pub crawl coming on... :)

Diz, you could just about squeeze 10 people around the table right at the back of the pub. Phone ahead (0207 490 4281) and ask nicely if you can reserve it, and place food orders in advance. The food is good - and the chef is very sexy...

We old gits go there every Tuesday afternoon and other times when in the area. Yes, we'll look at you as you enter in case you're a famous ticker there for your 9000th beer. If not we're all quite tame and will offer advice on what to drink if asked. Do it, you know you want to!

I couldn't vote while the poll was still open, because I andn't been to any of the pubs. That was put right on Tuesday when I went to both the Jerusalem Tavern and the Rake. I vote for the Jerusalem Tavern.

I've been visiting London semi-regularly (every few years anyway) since 1988 & for a while there I would just go on a blind hunt for a nice looking pub & more often than not, I'd find a decent one with at least a few handles of good real ale. Then slowly I started striking out more frequently - finding what amounted to little more than a typical American bar with a prettier exterior. I don't go to London to drink Foster's! So on my last visit a few years ago I decided to post an ad on London Craigslist asking if any beer fanatics could point me to a good pub. I was pointed very thankfully to The Market Porter where I ended up every single day of my trip. It was Christmastime & all the holiday beer was fantastic. It makes me happy to think I actually found a pub that's considered among the best in London. Next visit I'll have to split up my time between the M.P & the Wenlock Arms!

Scott, you should definitely check out the Wenlock, and all the other pubs which people chose as their favourites. There are countless others that are just as good, but aren't as well known. Although it may be worse than it was many years ago, personally I think the London pub scene is better now than it was six years ago when I first moved here. People will always grumble though!

I was at the Wenlock on Wednesday afternoon having a quiet celebratory drink and find it an ideal place where one can contemplate and reflect on the beauty of the beer in your glass. I’d had a quick lunchtime one at the Jerusalem T which I found ok in a distressed denim sort of way, while after the W I headed for an evening in the market Porter and then the Rake, which I adore for its selection of the finest ales known to humanity. Finding a decent beer in London is sometimes akin to putting your hand in the village fete Tombola.

Sorry about short notice, but our internet connection has been down for several days. Contributions for the MJ raffle prizes would be very welcome. Leave behind bar or see me Sunday before 8. Will be in Stalbans for rest of week.

Will be 50p per ticket. So far have Tim Taylors Light Mild shirt + 750 ml Duvel bottle.

Never trust people who think beer subdivides into "lager", "bitter" and "Guinness". Never trust people who say they like chain bars because "they always know what they're getting". Never trust people who list "socialising" as an interest on their CV. Never trust people who can't give a straightforward answer when you ask them where they're from. Never trust people who invite you on skiing trips when you have never expressed any interest in the sport (or indeed their company). Never trust blokes who try and ban the c-word from conversation because their bird doesn't like it (just say it more). Never trust people who "don't like to lose control". Finally and most importantly, never, ever trust people who don't drink beer, unless they have a very good excuse - and for the avoidance of doubt, being an uptight, miserable sod is not a very good excuse.
